Call for Proposals

The Greenbelt Foundation welcomes grant proposals from the diverse stakeholders who are working to protect the Greenbelt and its interconnected geographies and sectors, ensuring a healthy, vibrant, thriving Greenbelt for all.

The Greenbelt Foundation’s 2026 Grant Program Call for Proposals is currently open. Grant applications for this funding program can be submitted via the Foundation’s online portal until 5pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. For a complete overview of the Greenbelt Foundation’s 2026 Grant Program, please read our 2026 Grant Funding Guidelines.

The Greenbelt Foundation’s Approach to Grantmaking

The Greenbelt Foundation supports initiatives that will help ensure Ontario’s Greenbelt remains permanent, protected, and prosperous.

We strive to support projects that strengthen our collective understanding of the Greenbelt’s rich cultural, agricultural, and natural heritage; programs that ensure communities have accessible and healthy greenspace to explore; and initiatives that propose solutions to the challenges our province faces in terms of growth and climate change.

We encourage proposals that develop and/or deepen collaborations between multiple stakeholders. We prioritize projects that integrate a diversity of perspectives and skill sets, as well as those that can demonstrate strong community and/or partner support.

As well, we encourage submissions from underrepresented community groups and Indigenous-led initiatives, and review all proposals in the context of their contributions towards the Foundation’s commitments to Truth and Reconciliation.

The Greenbelt Foundation seeks to build dynamic partnerships with our grantees, and we pride ourselves in being an involved and supportive funder. We appreciate when grantees are proactive in sharing information and resources that can be shared and adapted to other areas of the Greenbelt, success stories that raise the profile of the Greenbelt’s benefits, and opportunities for the Foundation to participate in events and activities.

Eligibility Requirements

The Grant Funding Program is open to a broad range of stakeholders and community partners who can advance efforts to enhance Ontario’s Greenbelt. The Foundation will consider applications from registered charities, incorporated non-profit organizations, municipalities, First Nations and Indigenous communities, and conservation authorities with projects aligned to the Foundation’s funding streams.

Organizations can apply individually or in collaboration with others. Lead applicants must be a registered charity or non-profit organization.

All applicants will be required to complete an eligibility quiz before accessing the grant application on the Foundation’s grant portal.

It is essential that each project has an obvious connection to, and direct impact on, the Greenbelt. For maps of the Greenbelt, please visit our maps page. We strongly encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with the information about the Greenbelt and the work of the Greenbelt Foundation on our website.

2026 Grant Program Funding Streams & Scope

For the 2026 Grant Round, the Greenbelt Foundation will consider funding proposals between $25,000-$100,000 for projects that can be completed by December 2026. Funding requests can be for multi-year projects, but the phase of work outlined in your grant application must be completed by the end of the year. Since funding announcements will be made in spring 2026, project proposals should be for activities that can be completed within 6-8 months.

The 2026 Grant Funding Program is structured around three funding streams that scope the Foundation’s areas of work:

Resilient Greenbelt works with nature to create and improve public benefits provided by the natural systems of Ontario’s Greenbelt.

This funding stream invests in projects that leverage the Greenbelt’s natural systems to build cost-effective, climate-resilient infrastructure, bolster community stewardship initiatives to increase natural cover, improve species-at-risk habitat, restore damaged habitats, protect critical water resources, apply Indigenous knowledge systems, and enhance ecological connectivity across the region.

Sustainable Greenbelt sustains the healthy communities and rural vitality provided by the agricultural and rural economic systems of the Greenbelt.

This funding stream invests in projects that generate economic activity and promote thriving rural communities that support sustainable agriculture, good soil health practices, and increases knowledge of the benefits that communities derive from the Greenbelt’s reliable local food system, its protection of farmland, and rural resilience. These activities support the long-term prosperity of the region.

Accessible Greenbelt sparks and develops awareness, appreciation and engagement of the Greenbelt in residents, visitors and stakeholders.

This funding stream invests in projects that leverage the Greenbelt’s natural and cultural heritage systems for social benefit through education, public and stakeholder engagement, enhancement of recreational spaces, and promotion of the Greenbelt as a significant recreational and tourism destination. This stream increases understanding of the many benefits communities obtain from the Greenbelt, celebrates those benefits through engagement, and magnifies interest in sustaining those benefits.

For more information about the Greenbelt Foundation’s funding streams, including examples of projects and outcomes that will be considered within each stream, and themes that will be prioritized for funding, please see our 2026 Grant Funding Guidelines.
