This funding will allow Ontario Nature to take the preliminary steps towards developing a best practice guide to natural heritage systems planning. Working with municipal planners and conservation groups towards its development, the guide will achieve successful natural heritage system planning in municipalities, creating strong natural connections between natural heritage features and systems protected in the Greenbelt and its surrounding area. Greenbelt in the Bruce Peninsula

This grant will support the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association to lay the groundwork towards a shared community conservation and stewardship plan that protects ecological integrity and promotes sustainable land use on the Northern Bruce Peninsula. They will collaborate with not-for-profits and governmental organizations involved in conservation efforts on the Bruce Peninsula to develop a strategic plan which will lead to more efficient preservation and protection of water resources and natural heritage systems. Waterfront Regeneration Trust

Feasibility Phase for the Greenbelt Cycling Route

Partnering with Transportation Options, this planning grant will support the initial stages of developing a 600km cycling route that traverses six Greenbelt regions from Northumberland to Niagara.  The Greenbelt Cycling Route will allow Ontarians to connect and explore the Greenbelt in a new way – by touring and exploring by bike.  This planning grant will secure Municipal partnerships for the Greenbelt Cycling Route to ensure commitment to the creation, long-term maintenance and marketing of the route. Royal Botanical Gardens

Burlington Heights Heritage Land Management Plan

With this funding, the Royal Botanical Gardens will develop a management plan for the Burlington Heights Heritage Land, one of the six core natural areas within the Cootes to Escarpment Park System.  Burlington Heights is an environmentally significant area and a National Historic Site.  The project will make important contributions to the protection and enhancement of natural and cultural lands in the Burlington Heights area, and will facilitate access for sustainable recreation and education opportunities.   Continue reading

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre

Commercialization of World Crops in Ontario's Greenbelt

This project will increase the production of ethno-cultural vegetables on Greenbelt farms and connect growers to markets.  Vineland will provide training and support for rural and peri-urban farmers in the Greenbelt to increase the production of Oriental and Indian eggplant, okra, Thai chili peppers and others. Growing the Greenbelt

This project aims to engage Hamiltonians in on-going efforts to protect natural heritage, and potentially grow the Greenbelt. Environment Hamilton will work with municipal planning staff, local groups and residents to identify candidate lands and natural systems, and build a case of support for growing the Greenbelt. Enhancing the Greenbelt

The David Suzuki Foundation will continue to build the case for protecting natural capital in and around the Greenbelt. They are partnering with the Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health to promote the health benefits of near-urban nature, and to emphasize the connection between the Greenbelt and healthy communities. They will also undertake an analysis of municipal growth plans in the region to assess the degree to which local governments are adopting policy options to best protect their natural capital. This funding supports a project to protect important natural and hydrological features in the region by engaging residents to participate in on-going planning processes to expand the Greenbelt in Halton and Peel Regions.  Sierra Club will collaborate with community groups and municipal staff and councilors around the importance of protecting natural heritage, including its environmental, economic and health benefits.
